The CFM formula used by this calculator
CFM means cubic feet per minute: the volume of air moving past a point in one minute. This calculator first finds room volume by multiplying floor area by ceiling height. It then multiplies that volume by the desired air changes per hour and converts hours to minutes.
CFM = room volume × ACH ÷ 60

A 400 sq ft room with an 8 ft ceiling contains 3,200 cubic feet. At 6 ACH: 3,200 × 6 ÷ 60 = 320 CFM.
How to choose an air-change target
ACH is a design assumption, not a universal number. Occupancy, contaminants, moisture, exhaust, outdoor-air requirements, and local mechanical code all matter. A quiet office may need a different approach from a kitchen, workshop, restroom, clinic, or tightly occupied room.
Use a value from the applicable code, engineered design, equipment specification, or an experienced HVAC professional. Do not select a high ACH only because it produces a larger result: excess airflow can increase noise, draft, energy use, and duct pressure. Likewise, a low target may fail ventilation or moisture-control needs.
- Measure only the room or zone served by the airflow being estimated.
- Use average height when ceilings slope or change level.
- Calculate exhaust and outdoor ventilation separately when the design requires it.
- Check diffuser throw, return path, duct velocity, friction loss, and static pressure.
What this room CFM estimate does not size
Room-volume airflow does not determine how many tons of cooling or BTUs of heating a building needs. Thermal load depends on climate, insulation, glazing, orientation, infiltration, people, appliances, and other heat gains. Residential capacity is normally evaluated with a recognized load method such as Manual J, followed by equipment and duct design.
The calculated CFM also does not prove that an existing blower or duct can deliver the airflow. Actual delivery depends on the fan curve and total external static pressure. Treat this result as one defined requirement in a larger design process.

What is the difference between CFM and ACH?
CFM is an airflow rate per minute. ACH describes how many times the full room volume is replaced in one hour. Room volume connects the two measurements.
Can I use this calculator to size an air conditioner?
No. Cooling and heating capacity require a load calculation. ACH-based airflow alone does not account for weather, insulation, windows, infiltration, or internal heat gains.
Should I round the result?
The calculator rounds up to the next 5 CFM for a practical planning target, while also showing the exact result. Final equipment and balancing values should follow the system design.
Does the result include outdoor air?
Not automatically. It calculates the total airflow associated with your selected ACH. Code-required outdoor air and exhaust must be evaluated separately for the occupancy and location.
